External Evaluation of the Macmillan Cancer Support and Age Concern Community Support Project for Older People Affected by Cancer
Overview
The Macmillan Cancer Support and Age Concern Community Support Project for Older People Affected by Cancer is a three year project funded jointly by Macmillan Cancer Support and Cumbria County Council. Six district based community solutions officers are employed by local Age Concern organisations to work with communities and older people affected by cancer to:-
- promote awareness of cancer and the availability of existing information and support services;
- identify gaps in information and support availability within individual localities;
- develop new support and well being services that can be sustained locally in partnership with existing providers, older people and volunteers.
The project commenced in January 2009 and is funded to run until December 2011.
The evaluation will utilise a case study methodology incorporating in-depth review of the process and outcomes of the project within two district areas. Data collection methods may include:-
- interviews (face to face or by telephone)
- focus groups
- non participant observation
- questionnaires

NHS Cumbria has commissioned the University of Glasgow Crichton Centre for Research in Health and Social Policy to undertake an evaluation of the project.
Due to the innovative and dynamic nature of the project a scoping exercise was undertaken during the first year of the project to develop an appropriate model of evaluation. This is to be implemented in years two and three.
