The ONS today published a Census release including figures on new questions about language proficiency.

Some of the relevant figures include:

  • Eight percent of people in England and Wales speak a language other than English (or Welsh in Wales) as their main language.
  • Among those who do not speak English as main language 79 percent can speak English well or very well.
  • Less than half a percent of people in England and Wales (138,000) cannot speak English.
  • In London 22 percent of people speak a language other than English as their main language but only 2.8 percent of those cannot speak English.
  • The most common main languages other than English were Polish (one percent, 546,000) and Panjabi (half a percent, 269,000)
