Advocacy is taking action to help people say what they want, secure their rights, represent their interests and obtain the services they need.
Advocacy can help people to:
- Make clear their own views and wishes;
- Express and present their views effectively;
- Obtain independent advice and accurate information;
- Negotiate and resolve conflict
You can read a more detailed document, written by Cumbria County Council, explaining advocacy services here: -

Have you ever needed advice, or used an advocacy service? Do you work with vulnerable people and want to know what support is available? Do you feel listened to when you access public services? We would like to hear from you.
In 2011 Cumbria County Council is conducting its first ever review into the range of advice and advocacy services. Our aims are to establish:
- The benefits of advice and advocacy
- Whether services are reaching everyone who needs them
- Whether we should change the way advice and advocacy services are delivered
Over the next few months we will be carrying out consultation events and focus groups, and would welcome you all complete our online questionnaire. Please complete the survey by Monday 18 July 2011.
