POWER UP YOUR COMMUNITY AND SAVE CASH

Community Energy Roadshow

Today South Lakeland District Council in association with The Bay is launching a scheme called Power up Your Community, which puts energy buying power into the hands of the community.  The idea is that residents register their interest either online, by telephone or by visiting one of the SLDC offices and give their current usage figures of gas and/or electricity.  SLDC will then work with a specialist company called iChoosr who will negotiate with the energy companies on behalf of everyone signed up to the scheme to get the best tariff possible.

Councillor Clare Feeney-Johnson, SLDC Deputy Leader and portfolio holder for the Environment, said: “Power up Your Community is a massive opportunity for local residents to be a part of a scheme that helps reduce their energy costs.  Members of the public can sign up for free with no obligation and the only thing they need to do is visit www.powerupyourcommunity.co.uk or call 0845 050 4434 to register their interest.  Our community buying energy in bulk will help find the cheapest energy tariffs on the market.”

Registration will be open for people to sign up for the scheme from 1 August up to and including 17 September 2012 and they will need an up to date energy bill with them when they register.  You don’t have to live in South Lakeland to take part, you may also register anywhere in The Bay area and beyond.

An auction will take place on 18 September 2012 that will allow energy companies to bid for the custom of those registered.  From 25 September 2012 an offer with a price for energy supply will be sent to everyone registered calculated on their usage. Only then will people decide whether they wish to accept the winning supplier’s offer or not.

Cllr Feeney-Johnson, added: “By switching energy supplier people can often save a lot of money and switching has never been so easy thanks to support and guidance of the council.”

Further details can be found at www.powerupyourcommunity.co.uk or by calling 0845 050 4434 or visiting one of the SLDC offices at Kendal, Ulverston or Windermere or come along to a roadshow, see the list attached below.
