SOUTH LAKES INTER-FAITH FELLOWSHIP (SLIF)

SLIF was launched in 2008, to provide a forum (and fellowship) with the aim of bringing together the wide variety of faiths and spiritual paths in South Lakeland.

It currently has representatives from groups such as the Buddhist Group of Kendal, Church of England, Society of Friends, Unitarian Church, and Baha`i Community, and since its launch members of SLIF have worked with the Kendal Ecumenical Group (KEG) & Cumbria Interfaith Forum (CIF) to invite faith representatives to give talks and hold services, one example being the visit of a Sufi Zikr.

SLIF holds periodic discussion meetings and social events, mainly in Kendal, to bring people of faith together, and during last year`s National Interfaith Week held an open meeting :

  • to strengthen good inter faith relations at all levels
  • to increase awareness of the different and distinct faith communities in the UK, in particular celebrating and building on the contribution which their members make to their neighbourhoods and to wider society
  • to increase understanding between people of religious and non-religious belief.

During National Interfaith Week in November 2011 celebrations will be held in Kendal in the Unitarian Church and the Mayor`s Parlour in the Town Hall.

SLIF has helped develop interfaith awareness and an open approach to the contribution made by all faiths and spiritual paths to global understanding, and welcomes anyone interested in interfaith issues, members of minority faiths and those walking their own spiritual path, to join its mailing list.
