North-West MEP Afzal Khan to speak in Carlisle on conflicts in the Muslim World

Carlisle One World Centre (COWC) is working together with AWAZ Cumbria on a major talk by North West MEP, Afzal Khan CBE, on Friday 5th June at the University of Cumbria.

Mr Khan will speak on the conflicts in the Muslim World and rise of Anti-Muslim hate in Europe. This important address by an expert in this field will be open to the public and it will take place at 6.30pm in the Learning Gateway on Fusehill St, Carlisle. Mr Khan, a Labour MEP, is Vice-Chair of Security and Defence he sits on the European Foreign Affairs and Budget committees.

This talk will be one of the main events of Carlisle One World Centre’s War in the World Year, June 2014–June 2015 – a year of reflection on the impact of war and conflict around the world to mark the centenary of World War I. At the event, we will be launching an exhibition documenting the lives of people who have fled war zones to come and live in the UK, which we will be displaying at Carlisle Library for two weeks from 6th June until the 18th of June which is when our AGM will take place at the Church of Scotland on Chapel St at 7.30pm. We will have two speakers from the British Red Cross at our AGM, Ailsa Brook and Margaret Musgrave, who will talk about the history and current activities of the organisation and we will also have an update on the Nepal Earthquake appeals that have been taking place in recent weeks. On Monday 11th May, COWC volunteers worked together with members of the Nepalese community to raise £770 for the Gurkha Welfare Trust Earthquake Appeal by collecting money in Carlisle City Centre.

All are welcome to attend the above events. For more information contact COWC on 07881488566 or visit our website www.cowc.co.uk
