ESOL Classes in Carlisle

English Classes for Speakers of Other Languages were held in Carlisle on a weekday evening and a weekend afternoon at a local Community Centre and University of Cumbria. These were held as a collaboration between AWAZ Cumbria and Barnados. Women from a wide variety of BME backgrounds from Nepal and Thailand to Poland attended.  A nominal fee was paid weekly, which was cumulated to pay for a special day out to Talking Tarn for all of the women and their children at the end of March 2011.

These friendly lessons were designed to help BME women develop basic communication skills to cope with essential situations, such as visiting the GP and hospitals, speaking to their children’s teacher at school, carrying out transactions in shops and banks.  The women felt much more confident about their English speaking skills by the end of the classes and they felt able to speak about any anxieties they had about living in a new country.

A good time was had by all and many lasting friendships were formed.
