Tullie House Lunch Time Talks

AWAZ Cumbria celebrates Black history month all october long!

AWAZ Cumbria, the community development organisation which supports and empowers the Voice of Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) people in the county, will be organizing a number of activities to celebrate Black History month this October in Carlisle.             

A UK Black History timeline and films discussing Cumbria’s current multi cultural experience will be on display in the Community Case at Tullie House Museum all month long beginning on the 1st of the month; on 2nd October at 13:00, Sardar Aftab Khan, AWAZ’s Development Officer, will be giving a lunchtime talk at Tullie House entitled “ Our Hidden Heritage: The Contribution of Black Minority Ethnic People in the Cultural Heritage of Cumbria”; and from  the 15th – 31st October there will be an exhibition in partnership with Cumbria Archive Service of unique and thought provoking records documenting Cumbria’s connections to the transatlantic slave trade and the black people who came to call Cumbria their home. “Hidden Lives: an Exhibition of Cumbria’s Black History” will be open weekdays from 9.30 – 5pm at the Cumbria Archive Centre, Lady Gillford’s House, Carlisle.  Admission to all of these events is free.
